Kraton yogyakarta

This was the first pavillion we saw at the Kraton in Jogja. The Kraton is the name of the palace where the Sultan of the region still lives with his family. In true Indonesian fashion there was an admission fee and a camera fee for the front of the complex and also the back of the area. It's really kind of a small walled city with 20,000 people living inside (most have something to do with court life). Our tour guide was the third generation of his family working there, and said he receives free housing while he works there.

This was a gamelan set at the Kraton. Gamelan is the name for the Indonesian orchestra, including xylophone-like instruments, drums, gongs, and flutes. Tom and I attempted to learn how to play some of these instruments in a class at Wisconsin this past summer. It's really hard, especially for those with a background in western music who are used to that pitch and writing system!
